With the Oscars coming up in a few weeks, I thought it might be a good idea to discuss the best of 2009 and the Oscars. Do you think the Oscars represent the best in film or do you feel that it is biased to certain films. Should there be a category for what teenagers might see as the best of the year? In your opinion what is the best film of 2009? Give us your reasons why you think this and determine whether you think this film is Oscar worthy or whether you think it is just great in your mind.

The best film of 2009 would have to be Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus!!!This movie is outstandingly amazing! The acting is fantastic, the cast is...well the cast is one of the main reasons I agreed to watching this movie. Without a doubt, Johnny Depp and Heath Ledger are my favorite actors. This story is unlike anything I have ever seen while watching a movie. It has so much meaning behind it, with every character and every line. Although my interpretation could be different to others, I still believe that it has so much to do with society and the Catholic Church. Is it Oscar worthy? Sure, I think its Oscar worthy. But not just because it is Heath Ledgers last movie; it’s a great film. It should be recognized for its talents and hard preparation, regardless of the genre or the gossip behind the movie. After all, that’s what the Academy Awards are meant for, right? However, I would like to see some Independent films win Best Picture. But anyways… that’s my opinion.
ReplyDeletePs. I totally recommend watching this movie! :D
I think the Oscars are a little biased when is comes to certain categories and actors. Obviously it is a huge event, and a lot of hype is created with who will win in each category. But are the nominations really given fairly? It seems as though the only awards won are by big Hollywood stars, or the completely unknown from foreign documentaries. Regardless of the quality of the film, many of the award winners are chosen for their popularity in the public eye. And the ones who choose these winners are not the only people who watch these movies or have opinions. For example, teens and young adults are a major contribution to the opinion of the typical American eye; but whether they take the effort to vote or not is a different story. Although anyone can vote, I think there should be a different method of nominating to ensure a fairer, more accurate winner of each award.
ReplyDeleteI have seen a lot of movies in 2009, but one that never fails to stand out in my mind is The Hangover. It was hilarious, extremely entertaining, and all of the editing/production/actors/etc. were very well done. And as much as every single person I know loved it, my idea of it being the best movie probably wouldn’t constitute it as “Oscar-worthy”.
I believe the Oscars do represent that best in film, but in a more adult orientated opinion. I defiantly agree that teenagers and pre-teens will have a different opinion than adults on the best picture or best director. I do not believe that teenagers should have their own category at the Oscars because the Oscars in my opinion are targeted more towards adults, and the teens have their say at the Teen Choice Awards, MMVAs, Peoples Choice Awards and etc. I believe the best movie of they year is Avatar because of the creativity, acting and the story. What I liked about the creativity was that James Cameron and his producers created this whole other world that made you want to be apart of it and in away made u believe that it was an actual place. The idea of the Pandora, the way the people looked and all the creatures that lived in it was so different from what the “Hollywood” normal is for big budget films, and that is why I believe he should be honored for it. As well the story had a valuable message for everyone to see, I believe he was making a mockery of what our society is today. How the war in Iraq is raging, just like the Americans in Pandora, and the how we deforest all the trees leaving the animals and first nation people without their homes. This is shown when they are left homeless and hopeless after their tree is taken down. Finally the acting I thought was well done in the difficult situation they were in, filming on a green screen and had to provoke those emotions even though, they were not physically there. All in all, I believe James Cameron and Avatar is Oscar worthy and it is not just in my mind.
ReplyDeleteSonya Del :) !!!
In my opinion, I feel that the Oscars are biased to certain films. Each person has their own opinion about each film they watch so to say that the Oscars only represent the best in film is biased. Someone may think that a certain movie is the best but another may think the complete opposite. In my opinion, there is no overall best film. There are certain movie genres that are barely seen winning an Oscar, such as horror films. That is why i feel that the Oscars are biased to certain films. I do believe that there should be a category for what teenagers see as the best film. Teenagers see things differently then different demographics. An excellent movie chosen by an older demographic may be seen as a terrible movie to teens. Being able to have a category just for teenagers would allow other demographics to learn about what movies are best in our eyes.
ReplyDeleteI think that, "The Hangover" is the best movie of 2009. This film was absolutely hilarious and brilliant. The idea of this movie and the characters was what made me enjoy it the most. I believe that this film is Oscar worthy. It won a Golden Globe so i feel that it could also receive an Oscar.
Woow. That's a lot of questions to answer...
ReplyDeleteAlrighty, let's start from the top. I don't think the Oscars are the GREATEST representation of the best in film because the movies that are chosen tend to be...less action-y (?). Which is understandable, to an extent. I mean, the more explosions you have, the less intricate of a plot you'll probably have. However, films like those are a large part of sales in the film industry, and tend to be overlooked when Oscar season rolls around. The exception to this is when a movie like "Avatar" is released, where it is hyped to the point of explosion, sales sky-rocket, and EVERYONE is talking about it. THOSE are the types of movies that should be put for up for Oscars. As "Avatar" has clearly proven, you don't necessarily need the most origional plot to make billions. Just an origional PERFORMANCE. And whether that's as The Joker or Benjamin Button, the PERFORMANCE is what should be more largely considered, and not just performance in specific genres.
I honestly don't think there should be a "Teenager's Best of the Year" award. That is what things like the "Teen Choice Awards" are for. Many teen movies are made just good enough to satisy, but not nearly good enough for a critic, for example. Oscars are given to the people and movies that please EVERYONE, and NOT just one specific age group.
FINALLY, I think I would have to say that "Sherlock Holmes" was the movie of the year for me. Everything about it was so...amazing. To me movies like Avatar and District 9 were just as amazing movies, but something about "Sherlock Holmes" just made it stand out in front of the others. The plot was good, the acting was good, the costumes/settings set up the era very nicely. BUUUUUT, this is one of those films that would fall under the 'not-a-very-oscar-winning-genre' category. I mean, it definitely has the potential, but it could be overlooked for films that did much better in sales (ie. AVATAR). While it is pretty close, I would say that "Sherlock Holmes" was, for me, the best movie of 2009.
In my opinion, I feel that the Oscars represent the best movies in all film. They have different categories for every movie instead of basing it on certain kinds of films. They just look at all films and decide who the best people were. Also, teenagers don't really need that category because there are many other awards teenagers do have a say in. And, not all movies are teenager age based. My favourite movie of 2009 was The Ugly Truth. I think it's just an overall good movie. It works well with guys, and girls. And people of all ages would like it if they like romantic comedies. I wouldn't recommend it to kids younger than 14 though. But it had an amazing cast and storyline. But I don't know if i'd say it's Oscars worthy. In my mind, it'd be number one, but not everyone feels the same way as I do. This movie actually became my second favourite movie of all time because of how good I thought it was.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion of course the oscars are biased they are gonna be like any other award show and give the crowd what they want... even if the crowd knows nothing. Also the oscars obviously deal with a more serious or "adult" like judgment when it comes to movies. This is just like the teen choice awards use "teen" judgement.(although im pretty sure the awards are done by 50 year old balding fat men) In my opinion the oscar should be used as a recommendation tool, to help you see and hear about films you never would have considered. Look at the list cross off some of the typical big movie block busters and im sure you will find a Gem still. Also in my opinion Hurt locker was one of the best films I have seen in action. If the hangover does not win best comedy I will burn down the building- and steal their stapler.
